Playfair Display Medium:

The font creates a sense of luxury and elegance. It's similar to several of Condé Nast's, magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair

Asap Condensed:

This font, in contrast with the previous one, is very simple, in order to avoid making the magazine overwhelming or overstimulating for the audience. It also gives the magazine a more modern look.

Photoshoot Planning

On this photoshoot I tried to emulate the aesthetic of old money, with the focus on equestrianism, especially horse jumping. I wanted the photographs to evoke a classic, elegant look while still having certain aspects of sport photography. For this purpose, I shot in color, with a Nikon lens that was capable of providing enough zoom (AF-S NIKKOR 18-140mm / 3.5-5.6), as for my safety and others, I could not get too close to the manège.

Concerning the location of the shoot, I chose Catholic University Sports Club’s equestrian complex. This location made it so I could photograph a live event, where numerous members of the club competed against each other in a horse jumping contest. Fortunately the natural lighting the day of the shoot was just enough for the colors to show, but not too much, as that would have meant really harsh shadows, which I usually try to avoid. To be able to carry out the photoshoot I first had to talk to the people in charge of the contest, who then kindly suggested that I shoot on the first day of competition as there would be more variety of jumps.

The type of photography that the magazine includes is a mix of portrait photography, where the focus of the image is generally on the face of the subject, capturing the facial features and expressions of said subject; and sport photography, which requires prompt and speedy shooting, and changing locations, the technical requirement of this type of photography is a camera that is capable of capturing images with a fast shutter speed, of at least 1/1000, to freeze both the horse and the rider’s movements.
